SARS hunts for "R43m tax dodger"

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a businessman for allegedly failing to pay R43m in value added tax (VAT) to the SA Revenue Service (SARS), officials said today.

Earlier, Sapa was told the 38-year-old man had been arrested in Pietermaritzburg this morning, but officials said this was not the case.

The man was thought to be in Durban.

However, warrants to seize the man’s property were being executed in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

Properties and vehicles - valued at R90 million - were seized in dawn raids by the National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit and Special Tax Unit, and SARS investigators and police.
