'Ibuprofen with Asprin can be dangerous for heart patients'

Heart patients in habit of taking Ibuprofen, a common painkiller, with Aspirin are likely to have nine times higher risk of suffering heart attacks and strokes, a research said.

A study published recently in the annals of the Rheumatic diseases, found that Ibuprofen may increase the risk of congestive heart failure and blood clots in high-risk patients with osteoarthritis who take aspirin.

Medicos need to be cautious about giving ibuprofen and other cox-2 inhibitors to patients who have risk factors for heart disease which include high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking, the study said.

With painkillers having severe side-effects on heart patients, the doctors have become cautious in giving painkillers to patients, especially having any cardiac history. "The ibuprofen and other cox-2 inhibitors like (cyclo-oxygenase) may lead to high blood pressure and increased risk for heart attack and stroke," Dr Tarun Sahni, senior consultant, general medicine, Apollo Hospital told PTI.

The researchers compared the cardiovascular health of more than 18,000 elderly patients of osteoarthritis for one year
