U.S. scientists have found cytomegalovirus in salivary glands can be reduced or even killed by use of antibodies to enhance immune system function.
The researchers at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology said their findings, based on controlled laboratory studies of mice, might also have implications for other chronic viral infections, such as hepatitis and the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS.
The team's findings are detailed online in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.
